Haliburton man and woman convicted of two counts of animal cruelty
Haliburton, ON (December 16, 2015) – On November 10, 2015, Shawn Guild and Jessica Dawn Mann of Haliburton, ON, were convicted of two counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act.
- Permitting an animal to be in
- Failing to comply with prescribed standards of care – failing to provide adequate food and water.
On December 31, 2013, an Ontario SPCA Agent attended the residence of Shawn Guild and Jessica Dawn Mann in the County of Haliburton, where an emaciated Boxer-type dog was found in their possession.
The dog was surrendered and immediately brought to a veterinarian for medical treatment.
The veterinarian found the dog to be extremely emaciated with open wounds. The Boxer-type dog weighed 30 pounds and scored a body condition of 1 out of 5 (where 3 is ideal). The dog had staining on all four legs, and ulcerated wounds on both ears. The end of the dog’s tail was red with hair loss and there was lots of dandruff with fleas and flea dirt present.
In the care of the Ontario SPCA the Boxer-type dog’s condition improved. The dog weighed 44.8 pounds after a month of proper care and her wounds had healed.
“There is no excuse to let an animal go without proper veterinary medical attention,” says Alison Green, Regional Inspector, Ontario SPCA. “If you are unable to care for your animal, contact your Ontario SPCA Community Society to discuss what options are available.”
Shawn Guild and Jessica Dawn Mann received a prohibition from owning, having custody or care of, or living with any animal for a period of five years, with exception to one cat they currently own. They must rehome, or surrender to the Ontario SPCA, their dog, within 30 days.
The defendants must advise the Ontario SPCA of any change in address, and the Society has the right to enter the defendants’ property to inspect and ensure compliance with the orders. Guild and Mann were ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $250 each, as well as a fine of $400 each, to be paid within 6 months of the date of the order.
