Who We Are
We envision a world where compassion for animals and their well-being is ingrained in the fabric of society.
Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) is located at 1999 Technology Drive in our newly built, state-of-the-art Animal Care Centre. At PHS, we envision a world where compassion for animals and their well-being is ingrained in the fabric of society.
Our mission is to be the voice for animals through community outreach, humane education, and adoption; to keep animals and humans together through enhanced care and support; and to reduce pet overpopulation through accessible services.
We C-A-R-E. Our values reflect PHS’s commitment to community, animal well-being, respect, and excellence in care and service. These values guide our actions and decisions towards creating a better world for animals.
We are an open admission, For Life, organization; and the largest shelter in Peterborough County. All animals in our care receive veterinary care, vaccinations, are microchipped, and are spayed/neutered prior to being adopted. PHS does not receive any government or institutional funding for operations and relies on generous donations from the community.
Peterborough Humane Society was established in 1941, and the previous shelter at 385 Lansdowne Street East, was built in 1956 and was initially designed to serve as a pound. While the previous site served the community well for 65+ years, we outgrew the space as we care for more pets than ever before – around 1,500 pets come through our doors annually. On January 17, 2023 we began our move over to our new home at the Peterborough Animal Care Centre at 1999 Technology Drive, Peterborough. On June 24, 2023 we celebrated the official Grand Opening of our new home.
A Canadian First, our innovative Centre hosts three programs under one roof:
- Publicly accessible Spay and Neuter Clinic
- Education and Adoption Centre
- Leading-edge Dog Rehabilitation Centre in partnership with the Ontario SPCA & Humane Society.
