Peterborough Humane Society is fortunate to have an amazing group of volunteers. Our volunteers are truly the backbone of our organization!

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in volunteering for Peterborough Humane Society?

We currently have the below volunteer opportunities available. Only applications for available volunteer opportunities will be considered.

PetSmart volunteers

We have a fantastic partnership with PetSmart through which cats and kittens that are available for adoption are featured at the Peterborough location. PetSmart volunteers are responsible for the care of our cats and kittens while in the store. Duties include cat socialization, cleaning of the cages and answering questions from the public. Our animals are in PetSmart on two-week rotations and during the National Adoption Weekends, which happen 4 times per year.

Dish washer

Although not the most glamorous volunteer opportunity, this role is one of the most appreciated by our animal care team! With over 100 animals in our care at any given time, dishes tend to be a huge chore in the shelter. Duties include rinsing out dishes and litter pans, loading and unloading the dishwasher and putting away all clean dishes.

Thrift Store volunteer

Out Thrift Store, located in Northcrest Plaza, is completely volunteer-run by an amazing team! Love meeting new people? Then we would be thrilled to have you join our team!

Events lead

Peterborough is always abuzz with activity and many individuals and organizations invite us to set up a booth at their events. We require an organized and outgoing individual to take charge of our smaller events – setting up the booth, co-ordinating other volunteers as needed and engaging with the public on the great work being done by PHS.

Foster volunteer

Young kittens, nursing cats and dogs with babies, or animals needing a period of quiet care are placed in loving foster homes for a short period of time. There they receive care and socialization and kittens too young for vaccinations are protected from possibly contracting illness.

Fostering is an opportunity to add pets to your home when it works best for you and to be pet-free when you need to be. Most importantly, fostering can be a truly joyful experience for the entire family and there is tremendous satisfaction in knowing that you have played an instrumental role in saving lives and in helping animals to become truly adoptable.
