Our Adoption Process
Thinking about adopting? We’re so excited to help you find your new best friend! Our Cynthia Richards Cat Adoption Program and Glenn Allan Stonehouse Dog Adoption Program are all about matching animals with loving homes. Here’s how the process works for cats, small animals, and dogs so you know exactly what to expect.

Cats & Small Animals
Cat and small animal adoptions are on a first come, best match basis.
1. View adoptable animals
Come by during our business hours to meet our adoptable cats and small animals. You can also view all adoptable animals on our website.
2. Complete an Adopter Profile
Adopter Profiles are available online or in person. Once we’ve reviewed your profile and set up your adoption appointment, please plan to spend about an hour here so our team can help you find the right match.
3. Meet and greet
This is where you’ll meet the animals you’re interested in. We may also suggest others who might be a great fit for your home and lifestyle.
4. Find your match
If the timing works out, we may be able to complete your adoption the same day. In most cases, we place the animal on a 24-hour hold so you can prepare your home or take time to be sure you’re ready for the commitment.
5. Finalize the adoption
When it’s time to bring your new family member home, our team will walk you through the paperwork and answer any questions.
Please bring:
- Photo ID
- Proof of address
- A size-appropriate carrier
- All animals must travel in a closed vehicle

Dogs
Dog adoptions are by appointment only so we can focus on finding the best possible match for each dog and their new family.
1. View adoptable dogs
See them online anytime or visit us during business hours.
2. Complete an Adopter Profile
Adopter Profiles are available online or in person. Please share as much detail as possible so we can understand your home, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for in a dog. A completed profile and an appointment are required before meeting any dogs.
3. Profile review
If your profile is a good match for the dog you’ve applied for, we’ll contact you to arrange a meet and greet.
- We receive many Adopter Profiles, so it may take a few days to hear from us.
- We only contact applicants who may be the right fit.
- You’re welcome to follow up by calling 705-745-4722 x 201 or emailing [email protected].
4. Meet & greet
You may need multiple visits, especially if you have other dogs or family members who will live with your new dog. We do not usually finalize a dog adoption on the same day as the first meeting, though exceptions may be made in some cases.
5. Finalize the adoption
Once you’re ready to bring your new dog home, we’ll go over the paperwork and answer any questions.
Please bring:
- Photo ID
- Proof of address
- A collar or harness and leash
- A kennel if needed
- All animals must travel in a closed vehicle
