Giving Tuesday – Twyla’s Story

Nov 27, 2023

PETERBOROUGH, ON (November 28, 2022)
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that takes place each year after Black Friday. It is a day devoted to giving back, helping those in need and working towards a brighter future. By making a donation to the Peterborough Humane Society today, you’ll help match thousands of animals with loving families in need of the unconditional love that animals bring to our lives.

To highlight the power of your Giving Tuesday donations, we wanted to share the story of some very special dogs: meet Twyla & her pups!
Twyla, a gentle female St. Bernard, was found as a stray wandering the streets by our Animal Control Officers in late August of this summer. She was severely emaciated and neglected; thin and dirty, she was in desperate need of immediate care. Our team swiftly took action, and brought her into the Peterborough Animal Care Centre and were shocked to find she was actively in labour!

Once safely in our care, she gave birth to seven beautiful puppies. Her sweet babies were given celestial themed names by staff: Nova, Galileo, Astro, Celeste, Aurora, Astrid and Halle.

After giving birth, mom was in very poor state and couldn’t produce enough milk for her babies. Staff quickly jumped to action to care for the new pups by bottle feeding and providing around the clock care for them in order for them to survive. After many weeks of intense care and supervision the pups were ready to be on their own. Volunteers and staff fostered the puppies at their homes during their growth period to give them continuous care and socialization; going above and beyond to make sure these pups would flourish into wonderful family members.

After months of love, growth and attention, the beautiful puppies went up for adoption and each found their ‘fur’ever homes. Twyla remained in our care to gain weight, heal, and receive all of the enrichment and support we could provide and once her health improved she went for her spay surgery at our Peterborough Regional Spay / Neuter Clinic. Now, Twyla is healthy, happy and ready to find a loving home of her own.

Support from our community helps make these ‘happily ever after’ stories possible. This Giving Tuesday, consider giving to animals in need, like Twyla. Every donation received goes to support the care of these animals. Thousands of animals come through our shelter every year, you can impact their lives, and our community by giving today.

From a one-time donation, to monthly giving and even major naming opportunities; there are so many ways to give back this holiday season. Without donations to support staff, medications, food, shelter, etc., Twyla and her puppies would have nowhere to go or be cared for.

At a time when PHS is facing a service crisis by being over capacity and calls for surrenders and strays are increasing at extreme levels, it signifies our absolutely essential work, and we couldn’t do it without you.

This Giving Tuesday, please donate to help change the lives of hundreds of lost, abandoned or injured animals like Twyla who come into the care of PHS so they can find their ‘fur’ever home.
